Abstract

This research aimed to estimate the current water demand of the Shanafiyah-Nasiriya Irrigation Project by using the CROPWAT model. The estimated reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in Shanafiyah-Nasiriya Irrigation Project varies seasonally, with ETo values equal to or more than 200 mm/month during the dry season (May to September) and equal to or less than 175 mm/month during the rainy season (October to April). The total irrigation water requirement is 894 mm for the rainy season and 332 mm for the dry season. The Shnafiyah - Nasiriya yearly irrigation water requirement equals 796.5 million cubic meters (MCM). These results emphasize the importance of scientific planning for practical water usage in agriculture.
